havent done any seafishing for a few years now- use to go regularly with some lads that i used to work with both boat and shore- fortunatly the skipper that we use to go with was excellent and we never had a bad day -always caught loads of fish- we use to have species days where we would go out for particular species not just chuck it'n'chance it-caught some big tope and conger with him - brilliant days wreck fishing for cod and pouting and one really hectic day where we caught over 600 plaice between 4 of us!and they were all takeable size
when i was in australia i went marlin fishing a couple of times but un luckily never caught :( but i did catch a mako shark :D
shore fishing has never been so successfull for me have blanked more times than ive caught!!!apart from when i was in australia (did i mention ive been to australia) where i could catch loads of fish all day long bream rays skates flatheads(fantastic eating) taylor were very easy to catch even on bare hooks!!!!and some exotic species including puffer fish sunfish tiger fish and loads that i didnt know the names of |

Who did you used to go out with Dave? I used to do a bit of boat fishing out of Hayling Island, a skipper called Glen. He had a monster boat, really fast.
I still have all my gear up here in the shed. I am planning to go up to Orkney and try for the monster conger that supposedly live up there. Also for the Brown/Sea trout on the fly. Top sport and a lovely place. |

i dont get to do as much fishing as i used to do,seem to do alot more with work and spend more time with the dog due to having more dogs, going back 6 years ago i was well into my beach casting and every winter would look forward to the cod season and would be out on the sea wall in different parts of the country 3 times a week, spent alot of money on beach casters and multipliers and got into tournament casting with the south wales club, after joining south wales casting club i seemed to do less fishing and and more casting weights over fields hoping to beat my personal best cast,it went to my head a bit and every week i was determined to get my next casting badge,it sounds very stupid but on my first day just overhead thumping which i might add i thought i was hitting at least 150 yards they measured my cast and it was 107 yards, they gave me my 100 yard badge and i went home stripped my reel and took 1 brake shoe out and cleaned all the oil out as was instructed to do by my mate who is a instructor in tournament casting,i was determined to get my 110 badge which would only mean hitting another few yards, all this while i had forgot why i had gone to have lessons in casting and the reason was to learn how to pendulum cast and give me that bit extra distance when fishing for the cod,if they were not feeding in the 100 yard range i would have that extra 50 or maybe 100 yards to put a bit out and maybe get a fish, however all this i seemed to forget and got into the competition stage and did not fish for a good 6 months, every weekend i would be out practising and learnt to have the reel as low as possible as this automatically gives you a few yards in your cast even if you are over head thumping, also tok the level winds off all my multipliers started fishing with 15lb line ,spent loads of money on green elites and blues and shimanos and all this while was still not fishing,i learnt to cast a good distance for myself and after realising that i would not be able to get no further and having all the badges that i could get i stopped going tournament casting, with nothing to do i started to go fishing again and had a good few years all over the country meeting some good anglers and doing alot of cod fishing and then ray fishing in ogmore and also bass fishing and conger, did do a bit of plaice fishing as well for a while,in fact i went crazy for beach casting and i am sure many will agree that going back 8 years ago the cod fishing was good off the shore ,it got worse year by year and we always looked back on the year before and would say to each other that the year before was better,in the end we stopped going altogether and a few of us decided to go on a boat, this was new to me and i had no idea at first what sort of tackle we would use and did not know uptiding from downtiding, luckily a freind had a charter boat in newport and every weekend we would be on his boat, alot of the boys i used to fish with would say to me why go on a boat when you can go off the shore and catch fish,i said to them, dont matter how far you can cast you cant cast out to where the boats go,every week we would catch more cod than i had caught from the shore, some days i would be fishing 2 rods and both rods would be going at the same time, was nothing to have 50,60 fish between 4,5 of us and all fish being cod from 5lb to 11lb being the biggest, also squid being the cheapest bait it worked out that where we was spending 15 quid for bait on the beach we would spend the same on the boat,ok so it would cost 25 quid a head on the boat but the way i looked at it was you had all the tackle right by your side, did not have to cast to the horizon to try and get your bait past all the others on the beach next to you,up tiding was the way for me and the only time i do fish off the shore is if on holiday or in the summer a few of us go down porthcawl and fish off the end of the pier for a bit of fun and to get a tan,i do go on the boat around 8 times a year now and after going from beach casting to boat fishing i ended up working on a charter boat for 6 months, what a experience, would never do it again, you have no idea how much patience you must have when you have a party of 8,10 people from a works office, some of then never have fished ever and the tangles they get in,and having to show then how to bait up and how to cast, they think they having bites all the time because they not let out enough line and there weight is bouncing,i go for my own pleasure now and looking forward to going in the summer for some congers,i still take my hat off to those anglers who venture out when it minus below and get thenselves on the beach with there suits on,all the gear and there lamps and sit there for hours waiting for that one fish, like i said i no longer have time to do that no more but i still remember the good times and the feeling when you been there for hours and you not looking forward to reeling your bait in which has been out there for 30 mins and its time to put some fresh worm and squid on but you dont want to because you cant feel your fingers, you reel in put some bait on cast out there and wait some longer, then there it is the tip goes and you pick up your rod and forget aboput the cold and your reel is screaming, all of a sudden there are headlights all round you and you have your mates saying to you you got a good fish on there, you are aware of other people on the beach walking towards you and all of a sudden you got a crowd of anglers all round you all waiting to see what is on the end of the line, you pump the fish closer and as it sees the light or comes close to the surface it seems to find that extra bit of life and takes line of your reel, all the while you got 3,4 anglers telling you what to do,then there it is,a good sized cod,all those cold nights have been worth it and it gives you the incentive to get back out there, photos are taken and the fish is weighed and all the other anglers leave and go back to there rods and reel in and put fresh bait on and cast out there again feeling better and hoping they can get lucky and get a cod,it still gets cold on the boat though in the winter but the difference is you can stand by the pipe on the boat and you got that extra bit of clothing and if need be can go in the cabin for some tea or soup, fishing on the boats has got worse in the last few years and we have noticed the difference, there are alot more trawlers out there and we quite often see then closer to the shore line than they should be,more netitng going on than ever before with commercial boats ,we still enjoy our ray fishing and conger fishing in the summer and we do get lucky with some good cod each winter, planning a few more trips this summer and already going through my tackle and getting bits ready, fingers crossed will catch some good fish and also a tan, tight lines and good fishing ,will get a few photos up that i have got from boat and beach casting _________________ tell me about it mate, its comical,on the boat and got a pennel rig on with size 4 hooks and and a big cocktail of rag worm, lug tipped off with squid ,the bait is a good 6 inches in length and fish that size manage to get on the hook, all those times when i was match fishing and fishing match hook size with half a worm on fishing for small fish and you end up catching a good 5lb cod and go on the boat after big fish with big hooks and catch small fish, its the way it works with fishing, never know what you going to get with sea fishing,we had a trip out once at the beginning of cod season, cast out had small cod within secinds and could see the tip going crazy, whatever was nibbling the bait the hook size was to big and after i scailed down we had a good day on this lot below, went the next day hoping for the same and nothing at all, strange how it all works

never done any plug fishing for bass, does it differ much from what you would do with pike?never caught a mullet, down in lyme regis where we used to go on holiday year after year we quite often seen mullet in the harbour mooching around,a few of the locals used to catch them on bread flake or cheese, would like to catch one but from what i heard they easy to pul out of,any info on this, wrasse fishing i have also never done,i enjoy any type of float fishing and have a few dvds of lads catching wrasse and garfish, where would any of you say is a good place to go after some wrasse or garfish?bass fishing i do enjoy but again have only ever done it on the bottom with beachcasting, hoping to have some good days this summer on the beach and on the boat _________________ http://z10.invisionfree.com/huntersunited/index.php?ac

hi wife can see lyme regis from were i livethe bass fishing with plugs is great fun but you should try the mullet fishing very relaxing basicly use fresh water gear. wrasse fishing well i bottom fish for them get the bigger ones i think . i use 40ld line because the hammering the line takes from the fish diving into rocks. |
