a good question mate, there is a few traps which i have seen and used over here such as the larsen trap which is used for catching magpies mainly although it will catch jackdaws and crows ,see below a few pics of larsen traps
you have the bigger trap called the ladder trap which i have used and caught plenty of crows in,they are very efective,if you was to make the entrance smaller that they drop in it might work with the minor birds,a few pics of ladder traps below
i have made some of my own live catch traps for catching rats, for the first couple of days i was catching sparrows, only 2 at a time and i am guessing you must have loads of starlings, they are easy to catch however in most of my live catch traps which i put out for rats or squirrels and when checking them i am always releasing sparrows&starlings, blackbirds, robins,if you had lets say 10 small traps you could easily catch 10 sparrows in your traps, sparrows are to nosy for there own good and i quite often in 1 day have caught the same sparrows ,will find some pics of what sparrows i have had in my traps and put them up,starlings i have caught but more sparrows and blackbirds
found this and there is a trap on there which is used for sparrows, might be good for starlings as well

this site should be closer to you mate, got this trap on there which is for starlings, never seen 1 before myself
