rabbithunter sent me this to post on Ukhunters article section last year so i thought id post it here and give you something to read
Friday 26th May I phoned a farmer, who's land is approximatly 25 miles from where I live to make sure it was alright for me to come down the next day and set some snares, making sure there was no livestock in the fields I was planning to snare.
I like to prepare all my gear the night before, then I'm not rushing around in the morning
Approx, 60 fence wires, 50 peg wires, my snips & marker pins
I loaded them into the van ready for the morning.
a view from near the farmhouse
I set off at about 7:30am and arrived at my destination about 8am. I parked up by the farmhouse and set off walking to a field that me and my mate seen 30 - 40 rabbits the previous week. I had to make a bit of a de-tour as the usual way i would walk would involve going through 20-30 horses with foal's.
I finally got to the field to find out the runs weren't very apparent due to the short grass. I wouldn't let this stop me. I climbed over the fence and started seeing the runs under the fence. About five yards from the fence line is a very small banking then the short grass starts.
I set some wires down the fence line, about 6. I then walked back on myself setting about 4 or 5 peg wires on the run's that the buck's use to spred their scent the length of the fence. The peg wires were set at 5.5" as the grass was still fairly short.
The field then makes a slight bend. I picked up a run going through some longer grass. I set another two fence wires. I kept going down the fence line. On the other side of the fence, a different field started that had lamb's in and they were getting the feet through the fence so decided it would be wise to not set any snares on that fence line. Then started the back of someone's house. A big thick hedge and chicken wire greeted me. I could only see one good run going through so i put a fence wire on there.
I then reached the end of that field. I clambered the dry stone wall into some great snaring land. I walked half way down the field to where a banking ran the full width of the field. I walked along this banking, looking towards the bottom of the field. THere was some cracking run's going down, i set about 6 Peg wires at various heights between 5.5" & 6.5"
I reached the end of the banking and walked down the remainder of the field. I was greeted by this nice view
You should see two fences, just over the second fence is a stream, which you will find more about later on.
Also, note the banking.
I got over the two fences and over the stream. When i saw a two fantastic runs going up the banking, about 1/4 of the picture from the left. I set a peg wire on each of the run's at 6 1/4" as the rabbits were making quite a jump to the next beat.
I contuinued round the banking (about center of the picture, see the smaller banking???) I set a peg wire on a flat run here, and another on the banking. I continued to approx 3/4 from left of the picture. And set another peg wire on a flat run which proved to be well set, but a fox had took the rabbit.
Continuing till out of the picture i started setting some snares just as the rabbit was jumping the stream, 4 peg wires i set on different runs. I then clambered into the next field, where a small plantation was which i have snared before. I set about 6 fence wires along there.
On sunday Morning i snared a total of 11 rabbits, but one got taken by a fox, and another was just a wee un' so i left it for the foxes.
On Monday morning i snared a total of 9 rabbits, again one was a wee un, and when i got back to the van, i only had seven. tut tut.
So over two mornings snaring with about 40 snares out i got 20 rabbits. My best so far. Here is some pictures for you to enjoy.
