| Do many of you chaps do much in the way of rabbit snaring? how successful do you think it is in comparison to other methods? I always found it a pain checking the snares daily as time is precious to me......... |

| i do a bit of rabbit snaring- fortuneatly a couple of the gravel pits that i fish i also have the pest control rights -rabbits rats feral pigeons etc - if i am doing a full nights fishing then i will set a few snares up - i dont leave them out during daylight hours due to dog walkers etc- usually pick up at least half a dozen rabbits- bearing in mind that this isnt very successfull as our usual method of lamping with the air rifle, we have in the past shot more than we could carry in less than a couple of hours-- the money we make from rabbiting goes into our "bait fund" :D |

I used to successfully snare when I lived on the farm, we have a lot of forestry commission and rail track land around some of the boundaries.
The secret is careful prep, find the runs, look for the jumps/hops and set the snares over them. I also used to make sure the snares carried little of my scent, rubbed them in a bit of manure, soil, rabbit fur, etc to mask it.
I would then mark the snare with a stick pushed into the ground out in the field away from the hedge or with a strip of material hung in the hedge over the snare if there was stock in the field that might knock over a stick. I could then check the snare without getting close thus not adding any scent to the area.
I would then check morning and evening, you can get good returns.

I lay up to 50 snares at a time all obtained from woodga. It is rare for me to get a good bag though as the area I set them is over run with brock and reynard.
It's a real downer to see remains of rabbits and snares damaged sometimes beyond repair.
The farmer is happy thogh as he is in a win win situation whether I get the rabbits of other wildlife does.
